Your Numbers
Everything you own minus everything you owe. Negative is fine.
What actually lands in savings and investments each month.
7% return / 12% volatility is in the neighborhood of long-run diversified stock portfolios; lower both for bond-heavy mixes.
Your Forecast
- In 2056
- $775,033
- In today's dollars
- $319,303
- Plausible range
- $368k–$1.3M
Of the projected $775,033, $205,000 is money you put in — the rest is growth. The shaded band spans the 10th–90th percentile of 500 simulated market paths; the inner band the 25th–75th.
This is one line. Your actual finances are a dozen moving parts — Lodestar reads them and ranks your next moves by dollar impact.
Run your free analysisHow the Math Works
The solid line compounds your balance monthly at your expected return and adds your monthly savings at the end of each month — the standard future-value-with-contributions calculation, computed month by month rather than with a shortcut formula so one-time events and negative balances behave correctly. The shaded band replays the same plan through 500 randomized market sequences to show the spread of realistic outcomes, because averages hide the bad decades. The same deterministic engine powers Lodestar's full analysis and net-worth simulator.
Questions People Ask
How is the projection calculated?
Month by month: your balance grows at the expected annual return (converted to a monthly compound rate), then your monthly savings is added at the end of each month. The “in today's dollars” figure deflates each month's balance by your inflation assumption, so you see buying power rather than just a bigger number. The math is deterministic — the same inputs always produce the same result.
What is the shaded “range of outcomes”?
Markets don't return the same percentage every year, and the order of good and bad years changes the outcome. The band runs 500 simulated market paths (a Monte Carlo simulation) using your return and volatility assumptions and shades where the middle 80% of paths land — from the 10th to the 90th percentile. The inner band is the middle 50%.
What return and volatility should I assume?
There is no single right answer, and this calculator is education, not advice. As reference points: broadly diversified stock portfolios have historically averaged around 7–10% per year nominal with roughly 12–18% volatility over long horizons, while bond-heavy mixes have returned and swung less. Try a pessimistic and an optimistic pair to see the spread rather than betting on one number.
Why does the “in today's dollars” number matter?
A million dollars 30 years from now will not buy what a million buys today. At 3% inflation, prices roughly double in 24 years. The inflation-adjusted figure tells you what your projected balance would feel like in today's buying power — for long horizons it's the more honest number to plan around.
Do I need an account? Is anything stored?
No account, no sign-up. The calculation runs entirely in your browser and nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.
Is this financial advice?
No. Lodestar Wealth provides education and tools, not investment advice, and nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell any security. Projections are illustrations built from your own assumptions, not guarantees. For decisions with tax consequences, confirm with a CPA.
